Mitochondrial variability in the D-loop of four equine breeds shown by PCR-SSCP analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mirol,Patricia M.; Peral García,P.; Dulout,F.N..
A fragment of 466 base pairs from a highly variable peripheral region of the mitochondrial D-loop of horses was amplified and analyzed by single stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP). Fourteen distinct SSCP variants were detected in 100 horses belonging to four breeds (Arabian, ARB; Thoroughbred, TB; Argentinian Creole, ARC; and Peruvian Paso from Argentina, PPA). Each breed showed four to eight SSCP variants, many of which were shared between two or three of the studied breeds. Arabian horses were the most variable (eigth variants), with three variants unique to the breed. PPA and ARC showed two and one characteristic SSCP variants, respectively, while TB shared all its variants with at least one of the other breeds. An analysis based on the...

Multi-drug resistance gene (MDR1) and opioid analgesia in horses Ciência Rural
Natalini,Cláudio Corrêa; Cunha,Anderson Fávaro da; Linardi,Renata Lehn.
Opioid absorption in the intestinal tract as well as its effects in the central nervous system is modulated by the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) encoded in the Multi-drug Resistance gene (MDR1) also named ATP-binding cassete, subfamily B, member 1 (ABCB1). This MDR1 gene acts as a selective pump. The expression of this protein in humans and rodents inhibits cellular uptake of substrate opioids. The presence of the intestinal iso-enzyme CYP3A4 associated with MDR1 gene decreases the opioid analgesic activity due to an increase in intestinal metabolism, with a predicted intestinal first pass extraction around 20% which significantly influences the oral availability of opioids. In the central nervous system, P-gp expression decreases opioid neuronal uptake...

Osteoarthritis in horses - Part 1: relationship between clinical and radiographic examination for the diagnosis BABT
Souza,Maria Verônica de.
ABSTRACT Locomotor disorders are very common in the equine clinic, which may be partly due to the different types of activities horses develop. Osteoarthritis (OA), commonly known as degenerative joint disease, presents an considerable role in the series of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and may be associated with other problems such as navicular syndrome, periostitis or osteochondrosis. This affection causes progressive deterioration of articular cartilage, accompanied by bone and soft-tissue periarticular changes. In fact, it results from a complex interaction between biochemical and biomechanical factors. The objective of this article is to review information about clinical and radiographic findings of OA, the biochemical and biomechanical...

Osteoarthritis in horses - Part 2: a review of the intra-articular use of corticosteroids as a method of treatment BABT
Souza,Maria Verônica de.
ABSTRACT: The problem considered in this review is related to the frequent use of corticosteroids (COs) (i.e. steroids) in the practice of equine medicine and surgery as a therapeutic strategy in the treatment of degenerative joint disease, commonly known as osteoarthritis (OA). This disease is one of the most common among the equine musculoskeletal diseases, and is clinically characterized by pain, lameness, joint effusion at the initial stage, which usually reduces with the progression of the disease, and reduced physical performance. Although steroids are considered excellent drugs in the control of clinical signs resulting from osteoarthritis, they also influence cellular activity through activation of various signaling mechanisms. However, they can...

ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe a case of marked osseous metaplasia in the placenta associated with abortion in a mare. A 19-year-old Campolina mare with a history of multiple parturitions and absence of reproductive failure, aborted a fetus with approximately six months of gestation. There were no gross changes in the fetus and the placenta. Microscopically, there was multifocal replacement of fetal connective mesenchyme of the chorionic villi with well differentiated and partially mineralized osseous tissue (confirmed by von Kossa staining). To further characterize the collagenous component of the lesion, sections of the placenta were stained with Masson’s trichrome and Picrosirius red. Osseous tissue deposition had abundance of type I...

Reestablishment of equine intestinal transit. Part II: Treatment MV&Z
Thomassian, Armen.
Reestablishment of the normal intestinal transit in horses with sharp abdominal discomfort has been a major challenge even for the most experienced professionals in equine practice and surgery. Major procedures to control and repair gastrointestinal motility demand periodic observation of physiological parameters, intravenous administration of fluids to control hypoperfusion and electrolyte balance and digestive decompression by nasogastric intubation and cecum puncture. These emergency procedures are adopted whatever the etiopathogeny of the colic. Besides the traditional procedures, the veterinarian can also use acupuncture or even surgical intervention in situations where no responses were obtained by using the conservative therapy or when the case...

Renal cell carcinoma with peritoneal carcinomatosis in a mare Ciência Rural
Mesquita,Leonardo Pereira; Mesquita Neto,Francisco Duque de; Varaschin,Mary Suzan; Wouters,Angélica Terezinha Barth; Wouters,Flademir.
ABSTRACT: Renal cell carcinoma, especially with extensive involvement of peritoneal cavity, is rarely described in horses. This study described a case of renal cell carcinoma in an 8-year-old mare, which presented with an enlargement in the left flank, decreased appetite and straining to defecate. Clinically, a tumor in the left retroperitoneal space was detected by rectal examination and ultrasonography. The animal died after one month of clinical evolution. At necropsy, the left kidney was completely effaced by a 50cm in diameter, irregular, round, lobulated cystic mass with necro-hemorrhagic areas. Within the peritoneal cavity, there was severe hemoperitoneum and numerous sessile and pedunculated masses ranging from 2.0 to 15.0cm diameter that were...

Repair of experimentally induced perforating bone lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses MV&Z
Ribeiro, Max Gimenez; Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Thomassian, Armen; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, radiological and anatomopathological evolution of experimentally induced bone perforating lesions in the distal phalanx of normal horses. Eight adult horses of both sexes totally free of feet disorders were used in the trial. Lesions were produced through the sole of the distal phalanx, using a miller and an electric drill. Results demonstrated that the technique used allowed a complete and precise approach to the pedal bone; lesions were repaired without any impairment to locomotion. This technique may be an alternative for the usual bone curettage of septic pedal osteitis, keratoma, distal phalangeal fracture and sequestration and draining of foot abscess.
